Amazon plans CT call centre

Johannesburg – The world’s largest online retailer Amazon said on Tuesday it plans to expand its customer service centre in Cape Town.

The investment is expected to create 1 000 new jobs as it bulks up the company’s existing presence.

Said Brent Jaye, director of Amazon’s North American customer service division: “It’s important to have customer service representatives available when it’s convenient for our customers.

The retailer reported sales of about $7bn during the first quarter of 2010. Its local operations in South Africa are restricted to customer services, and do not include local shipping and currency for its retail services.

Just a pity they won’t start shipping any of their products to SA. We still need to rely on a couple of local importers, all with huge profit margins to import their products. Maybe in future… we can dream can’t we?

As an interim measure MWeb says it was able to secure alternative capacity on Telkom’s Saix network from 5pm on Monday until 2pm on Tuesday. At that time, however, Telkom withdrew the capacity due to concerns over their bandwidth commitments it has made to Fifa for the soccer World Cup.

Blogging from the iPhone

I’m just quickly testing WordPress 2 for the iPhone to see how it will work as a blogging tool. The will enable me to update most of my sites from wherever I am.

This might just come in very handy next week when we’re at the beach.

Preschool Rugby Match

It was great to see my son (Alex) take part in his first rugby game against another team. He is in grade R (pre-school) and they just started learning how to play rugby this year. Below is a video clip of his team against the grade 1 team.

P.S. This was a great opportunity to test my new Canon HV40 camera – although it’s hard to see the actual quality on a website.

Last.fm started charging for international users.

Last.fm started offering free trails of their new paid radio station for users outside of the US, UK and Germany.

Home – Last.fm

Now, $3 per month is not a lot of money, but to pay more to listen to internet radio that one does for a TV license is a bit rediculous. Especially if you only listen to last.fm about once or twice per month… I really enjoyed the service, but will not be paying yet another monthly fee for something like this.

I also found one alternative, although it has a weird interface, that seems to be able to play music according to your personal preferences. It’s called Grooveshark.

Grooveshark

Anyways, if you have any other suggestions which are available in South Africa please let me know. That means no Pandora / Spotify (which looks like an excellent service once available locally).
